I look forward to having two paintings in the Florence Thomas winter-themed show in Downtown West Jefferson, NC, and to the opening on Jan 23, 2026 , 1-3pm.

In January 2022, Charlotte enjoyed exceptionally wintery weather for our climate. On the second Saturday of waking up to a magical blanket of snow and ice on our always-green landscape, I experienced sunrise from my second-floor backyard studio, which in winter overlooks much of our neighborhood. Dawn came blazing in, piercing yellow and hot pink, in sharp contrast to silvery branches and rooftops. As soon as the intensity faded, I went to the easel determined to capture that new-year energy.
Embedded in these abstract layers is stenciling of construction fencing from a neighboring house under renovation, one of many in a rapidly-evolving neighborhood. It served as metaphor for the change taking place around us, and within us, especially at the new year. The color persists behind that blanket of snow and change, just as the spirit and history of communities, families, and individuals, persist despite dramatic transformation.
