In preparation for presenting our project idea to the class, my kids and I spent a weekend exploring various patterns and color combinations -- the most fun I've had with markers in ages!
We consulted quilting design book, " 5500 Quilt Block Designs ", for inspiration and reference.
First the students drafted ideas on 6" grids, then transferred their designs to 12" paper.
Designs were edited as they were transferred to larger scale, and color decisions were made.

Colorful geometric quilt block designs on graph paper, featuring patterns with squares, triangles, and lines in blue, purple, red, and black.

 June and her 12" draft
During a break in our very wintery February, we cut, primed, and painted 12" boards.
Painting in the Practical Life Room!

Children in a classroom engaged in arts and crafts, using paint and paper on a large table. The room has wooden cabinets and kitchen appliances in the background.
Kendall took extreme care and painted many layers to perfect her design.
Our final class meeting, a lively discussion to decide how to display and label our squares.
 Celebrating finishing touch-ups!
